New for Fall 2008 - 4-Day Option (M, Tu, Th, F)
Development of the Preschool Child
The importance of the preschool years as stepping stones for later years should not be underestimated. During the preschool years, much is taking place in the developmental stages of the young child. A nursery school experience can play an important role in developing a young child socially, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Through a wide range of opportunities and experiences, plus guidance from loving teachers, a young child is encouraged to explore, investigate, think, learn, and grow. He or she will learn about himself or herself, others, the community, and the world around him or her. He or she will have the opportunity, fostered by means of a safe and healthful atmosphere, to see himself or herself as a person capable of loving and being loved.
Location
The nursery school is located at the Bethany Christian Church and is a vital part of the Bethany Christian ministry. The nursery school is a non-profit function of the church. Bethany is located directly across the street from Highland High School, at the corner of Cross & Rangeline on the north end of Anderson. Click the Directions tab above for a printable map.
Entrance Requirements
Enrollment is open to all children eligible and at a stage of growth and development where they can benefit from a nursery school experience. To be eligible, a child must be at least 3 years of age by September 1. A child age 5, but not enrolled in kindergarten for the school year, may participate in the program.
Hours
School Hours are 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. A choice of programs are available.
There are two semesters between September and May, with the calendar being similar to the public school yearly calendar.
Curriculum
During the hours of nursery school, the children are engaged in a balance of self-selection and teacher direction activities, both of which are valuable avenues of learning. When a child arrives in the morning, he is given freedom to explore learning activities and interest areas found in the classroom. There will be enough interest centers and activities going on at one time that the child will become motivated, learning something new and challenging. On the other hand, there will be enough things that remain the same to provide security and familiarity. A teacher will be nearby to lend support when needed, answering a question, offer a challenging statement, or make suggestions. There will be free time, small group time, large group time, quiet time, and a time to explore, experiment, and discover.
Included in the curriculum will be:
Curriculum Guides:
-
Ready Steps (Houghton Mifflin)
-
Peter Panda (Standard Publishing)
-
Character Builders (Revelle)
-
Funday Weekly Reader
-
Clifford The Big Red Dog Magazine
